Don’t get me wrong; I’m definitely not philosopher-y or anything. It’s just that.. I dunno why it peeves me so much when people mistake ‘you’re’ for ‘your’, and ‘they’re’ for ‘their’. Oh, and ‘though’ for ‘tho’. Especially the Malays and Chinese. I can tolerate and understand if a foreigner gets mixed up, because English isn’t their first language, but get this; it is theforeigners that get it right most of the time!
I mean, come on. It’s embarrassing, really. My take on it is that we should at least know decent English. Seriously, I mean, we all learnt English as a subject for.. oh, I don’t know.. 15 freaking years?? Everyone knows that I’m not exactly what you would call ‘smart’ (and no, I’m not being modest. Actually, ‘intellectually dense’ is more like it), and hell, 15 years of learning Bahasa Melayu and speaking them with my friends has got me speaking like a Malay. Why can’t it be the same for the rest? What excuse do they have?
